Sharing my Super Simple Secret Packing List
Today I’m off for a little adventure, meeting my clients and colleagues for a couple of days sans laptop 🙂
Often I hear from friends and clients that I must be super organized in every area of my life. While that’s not exactly the case, I do like to keep things systematized so that when I’m busy or stressed I don’t make stupid or expensive mistakes.
For example: forgetting to book a hotel and now they’re super expensive or leaving my toothbrush at home and guzzling mints until I can find a drug store.
So today I want to share my super simple secrets to packing list with you as a digital download (no opt-in required).
I know, we’re in the final few weeks until the end of the year and holidays are all around us, but that doesn’t mean work doesn’t continue. In fact, if you’re in products this might be the busiest time of year, even if you’re not that excited.
If you’re sitting at your computer or reading this on your phone and trying to get motivated to do a little work then I’ve got 5 ways for you to get your groove back. Easily.
This year I set a goal to read 52 books in total, an average of one per week and while I was slow to start my goal I am excited to say I completed the challenge last week with the amazing When Breath Becomes Air.
This accomplishment is a stark contrast to 2016 when I didn’t read much but I did write and publish 3 books. Here’s a little about those volumes, what I learned and a special deal for November.
Every single day I see entrepreneurs who are hustlin’ and, honestly, it warms my heart to know that there are people out there doing the WORK. For some reasons we’ve allowed the slick-talkin’, slimy marketing gurus convince a generation of inspired entrepreneurs that all you need to make a million online dollars is:
And while all that is fine, it patently does not HELP the clients you are taking money from. Now. Those tactics might “attract” a community and make you feel that you’re alignment but people are waking up and no one – no one smart – is going to pay you again and again for promising the world and delivering dirt.
When I was in college we had a pinnacle strategy class that was feared and dreaded by all in the business major. There was just one teacher, it was only available for seniors and students routinely went into mid-semester with a failing grade.
During one of the projects we were sorted into groups of 4 presenting before the class and my group went first.
What happened taught me my first lesson about empathy in business.

Have you ever set out, energetic and excited, for a new year, the start of another month or even just a Monday, full of anticipation and expectation and then found by lunchtime you’re completely worn down and have lost all that energy?
There are so many things that can contribute to a motivational crash but I’ve observed that it usually comes down to a failure in one of three areas:
Inspiration: there’s not actually a clear idea of what you want so you’re excited, for something…
Expert Guidance: you know what you want, you’re ready to do the work, but you don’t exactly know how to do this. You need some support, preferably from someone who has actually done it successfully in the past.
Feedback/Community: you’re doing the work, you know what you want but you’re doing it all alone and it doesn’t feel great.
If you’re missing one of these pieces then you might find your motivation has left the building. Luckily, there’s something happening next week that I think can help.
About a month ago I posted an ad on Craigslist, looking for someone who would come to my home and clean. Not that remarkable. But reading through the ads reminded me (again!) how some people self-sabotage when it comes to getting clients and other areas I see this happening.
When it helps, I’ll include some of the actual responses I received and one application for a different job that led to me hiring the sender.
One of my favorite comedians, Jon Richardson, says that there are 2 types of people: putters and leavers. And while I find that generally true, I’ll argue there are 2 types of entrepreneurs: planners and leavers.
Planners are the folks who are looking months and seasons ahead to set the trends (think Jeff Bezos of Amazon, founder of Zappos Tony Hsieh and fashion icon Anna Wintour). There are leaders in every industry, sure, but planners are also the people within those organizations who are setting up promotions, product roll outs and launches in advance of the public announcement.
And then there are the leavers, as in “leave it, I can do it later…” and those are the entrepreneurs I want to talk to today.
Last week I shared why you must take time off, even if you’re just developing your business or haven’t yet hit all your goals.
Because, let’s face it, no business is so perfect they reach all their goals all the time.
You might be on board with taking time off but actually executing a plan to leave feels like another project you don’t have time to finish. Here are 3 things you must do before taking time off (if you want your business to be standing when you get back).
