Outsourcing 101 – Who Should Manage Your Email?

April 18, 2013 Outsourcing by Kelly Leave a Comment

Like your calendar, email is one of those work related things that most entrepreneurs assume they just have to deal with and can’t be outsourced. Focusing on the things that directly bring income into your business and being able to clone yourself in even those tasks will enable your business to grow faster.

If you’re like most entrepreneurs you get buried in email every day and when you’re busy it gets even more overwhelming. Open up to the idea of outsourcing even if it doesn’t feel like you have too much email yet. To understand who should manage your email I like to break messages down in 3 categories.  Continue Reading →

Managing a Team – The Importance of Reviews

April 15, 2013 Team & Support by Kelly Leave a Comment

Entrepreneurs who build a business and bring in a team often fear that they’ll spend more time babysitting than actually enjoying their freedom and doing higher level tasks.

Even with proper systems, if you don’t review your team’s work you’re asking for trouble. With regular review you’ll be able to ensure quality stays high and that the work delivered is still relevant, useful and timely. I can’t describe how wasteful it feels to be paying someone to complete a task which is useless to your business.

And even the best employees need you to review their work, give encouragement, make tweaks and have a chance to ask for feedback. So here are 4 ways to do an online business employee review:  Continue Reading →

Outsourcing 101 – Why You Should Outsource Your Calendar

April 11, 2013 Team & Support by Kelly Leave a Comment

One of the most luxurious things in owning your own business seems to be having someone who manages your calendar and acts as a gatekeeper. Having an assistant manage your calendar is also one of the most important to business growth. If you’ve never outsourced this task before, you may think ‘why should a VA manage my schedule?’

Outsourcing your calendar and scheduling tasks to a virtual assistant is valuable both in terms of saving your time and bringing more value to your organization. Let’s look into each of these more closely.  Continue Reading →

Managing a Team – The Basics

April 8, 2013 Team & Support by Kelly 8 Comments

So far I’ve shared many of my tactics and strategies on hiring so you can stop doing the busy work around your business and focus on service. Once a team is in place, there are a whole other series of challenges I’ll be addressing to support you. The first is “how do I manage my team?”

At the very beginning, know that managing takes time and these tips are just the beginning! But if you get organized, settle on one communication method, view this time as an investment, and then actively manage your people and projects, you’ll succeed where many entrepreneurs give up. Continue Reading →

You Can’t Prepare for Everything

April 4, 2013 Systems by Kelly 1 Comment

The opposite side of the spectrum from “I don’t need no systems” is the idea that you need systems for every single possible circumstance that could come up in your business. Which, I’m sorry, is impossible.

It’s impossible because the advertising, audiences, marketing, sales, even the world is changing too fast. Pinterest and Instagram didn’t exist 3 years ago, Twitter was brand new 7 years ago, and Facebook was still college students only back in 2003.

To quote my favorite TED talk of all time and the amazing Sir Ken Robinson, “how can we possibly educate children for the 21st century when we can’t anticipate what the economy will look like at the end of next week?”

The world is changing too rapidly to be prepared for the elusive “everything” and entrepreneurs know better than most that you have to be adaptable.  Continue Reading →

Why Should I Trust You?

April 1, 2013 Business Building by Kelly Leave a Comment

On a day when everyone is on the lookout for pranks, it’s the more frequent practice of businesses fooling the customer that may be influencing your own leads when they interact with your company. No one likes to be fooled, especially when it comes to investing time and money in a solution.

So why should a client trust you? How is trust even measured?

When it comes to building a business the “know, like and trust factor” is something oft repeated but rarely explained. How do you build trust when you’re just starting out? In this post we’ll focus on consistency which is a big part of trust, especially when you’re new to a field or niche.

Getting Started with Systems

March 28, 2013 Systems by Kelly 1 Comment

I’ve been wondering… have you considered holding your child back from kindergarten if they don’t yet have a grad school picked out? I’m guessing you think that idea is crazy. Yet every day I hear from entrepreneurs who haven’t began a calendaring system because they don’t have their full time team, office suite and trademarks in place.

Systems don’t have to be all or nothing, and you can get started with systems today, in 10 minutes or less, and start the process. Why do we have this all or nothing mentality and how can you get started now?

Do you get caught up in event excitement?

March 26, 2013 Business Building by Kelly Leave a Comment

If you’ve ever found yourself at an event or conference and caught up in the excitement and then find yourself purchasing something that you don’t use and wonder why?

Once, on a trip to Disneyland, I was amazed that I began thinking of buying a pair of novelty Mickey Mouse ears. Surprised at the thought, I began to understand how a person can easily get caught up in the excitement of an environment, and seeing everyone else with Goofy hats or ears normalizes the experience.

As entrepreneurs, we must be aware that the same things happens at events and it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and end up buying expensive upsells that don’t serve our current business needs.

Sometimes, the next level program and product is exactly what you need to grow your business (and that’s awesome!) but so many times I watch well meaning entrepreneurs jump into commitments they haven’t thought through.

It’s just like those Mickey Mouse ears – when you’re at Disneyland, you want to fit into the crowd, you’re the odd one if you don’t wear them. But when you’re back in everyday life, it becomes more clear exactly how something fits into your life.

I wonder how many Disneyland sweaters end up at Goodwill? If you go into an event and get caught up in the excitement then it’s easier to be convinced that you can prolong this good experience if you just buy…

Remember to be aware and to critically assess what you need most in your business, how you learn best and seek that out actively.

Watch this video from Kelly about why we get wrapped up in the excitement:

Because I’m Not Your B**ch

March 25, 2013 Personal Development by Kelly Leave a Comment

There’s a disturbing trend among business people, especially entrepreneurs and I need to say something here and now.

When you hire a contractor, consultant or even a part time employee, they are not your b~tch.

Back in the day when I worked 40 hours in an office, my soul being crushed daily by the banality of it all, my boss had every right to show up at my desk and say “stop doing that and start doing this.” She could direct me as such every day, every hour if she wanted. Because I was a full-time and dedicated employee, that was a benefit of our relationship.

However, most entrepreneurs are not dedicated to one client full time. So why are those clients treating them in the same way (and getting away with it!)?  Continue Reading →
