I’m of the belief that everyone has something to say, even if they’re naturally introverted. We each have skills and lessons and truths that we’ve amassed over years of being on the earth and in business.
So why is it so dang hard to get the words out consistently?
If you’re struggling with content, whether it’s blogging, podcasting or vlogging (video blogging if you’re unaware), then while I can’t tell you why writer’s block pops up, I can give some ideas on how to overcome it.
Strategy #1 – Keep a List of Topics
One of my favorite things to do is write down ideas. It could be ridiculous bucket list items like “jump out of an airplane” or practical “pay bills” but there’s something incredibly satisfying about crossing things off. When it comes to content I use the same strategy by having an ongoing list of topic ideas that I add to frequently.
These ideas might come from conversations with friends, leads or clients, ideas from my team, responses to articles I’ve read or just things bouncing around in my head.
The trick is you don’t have to write them in order. Or at all.
When I’m stuck for a topic I simply go to the list, scan through and stop when I find something I really want to share today.
Strategy #2 – Ask WWMICG?
That’s shorthand for “What Would My Ideal Client Google?”
See, your blog posts need to be information and helpful but not just for the world, specifically for your ideal clients. Hence the title of this post “how to blog consistently” which is something people struggle with whether it’s a business or personal blog.
(Don’t get me off topic on blogs that are businesses but don’t act like it. Actually, that topic is going on the list.)
When it comes to your business blog it may be hard to focus on reaching new ideal clients because you’re so busy serving the clients you have right now. That’s okay. But you still need to get inside their heads.
By the way, blogging doesn’t have to be a written article 400-800 words. It can be a podcast audio, a short video, an infographic.
Strategy #3 – Batch it and bank it
There are tasks that I hate doing but are so minor and infrequent that it would be silly to hire out. Like shredding. The box slowly fills up and then I shred everything at once because I can never seem to empty the shredder without making a giant mess.
If I tried to do shredding daily or even weekly it would be less effective than my monthly system.
Blogging can be the same way. If you want to be more consistent in your blogging, and your topic area isn’t extremely time sensitive, then prepare some content ahead of time by batching.
Here’s how it works: when you’re incredibly fired up and energized and maybe had too much coffee, crank out 2 or 3 videos at once. Or write a 2 part blog series. Capitalize on that energy! But instead of spamming your site with 5 articles in 3 days, pace them out by scheduling them for the weeks to come.
Sidenote Some of you are married to the idea of being “authentic” by only posting “in real time.” Listen. Your audience enjoys regular content sooo much more than feast or famine. And if you follow this practice then be prepared to not take vacations or ever get sick. Having content in “the bank” allows you to have a life and not just a blog.
Consistency in your business blog is important, not just for your reputation and traffic but to continually bring in new leads to your business. Your Action Step is to take one or more of these strategies and put it into action today!
