As the expert in your field, it’s a great idea to use, re-purpose and get the marketing content out there in a big way, but you can’t do that if you haven’t finished the content first! It’s easy to get distracted or discouraged whether you’re working on a blog post or new program but important to push through and finish.
Content doesn’t only need to be written, part of the challenge is finding a medium that you like to teach, so it’s easier to complete. Here are just a handful of ways that you can record your expertise as content:
- blog post
- ebook
- audio or podcast
- teaching one to one
- video course
- workshops and events
- in a physical book
Of course it doesn’t matter if you are constantly in development and never actually get the content finished, so it can be shared. Keep in mind these 2 principles when it comes to content:
1. Perfect is the enemy of Good – Voltaire
Instead of waiting until you have a “perfect” message or offer, just get it done. You can always add more content, provide an update or on-going support.
Many people think that if knowledge exists on a spectrum of 0 to 10, where 0 is “complete novice” and 10 is “worldwide expert”, they have to be at 10 before teaching or sharing knowledge.
Even if your skill level is not yet at 10, you can certainly share what you know to people who know less than you do. Waiting until everything is just right is a dangerous form of perfection paralysis that will keep you stuck.
2. Start by Getting Started
Often times we think that we have to impart ALL of our knowledge in order to make a difference and it’s impossible to give less than 100% of ourselves. But the truth is that many times if we start with everything, it can be completely overwhelming to the beginner.
It’s the same reason I started my online video series with just 5 steps to getting started. I couldn’t cover everything in just 5 videos so I’ve continued to share content, answer questions and provide support.
By giving some of what you know and filling in the blanks later, you can continue to teach and provide value – it’s the way I prefer to teach because the material is constantly evolving and up to date.
I love the phrase “if you want to stop starting over, you have to stop quitting” – remember this when you get started and then keep working.
