Here in the states it’s Independence Day so – sorry to all the Brits out there but – we’re celebrating with a day off, lighting shiny things on fire and barbeque.
One of the reasons I enjoy holidays such as this is that the history is inspiring. While we celebrate national independence today, it’s also an important practice to celebrate your personal independence.
Here are 3 of the freedoms to embrace every day as you celebrate personal independence:
Freedom to Fail
As an office worker one of the hardest realities is that you often feel like you cannot fail. No mistakes can be made and also, risks can’t be taken. In an entrepreneur’s life failure is everywhere and I encourage it!
When we fail, we learn faster, adjust quicker and build stronger companies!
Freedom in Flexibility
9-to-5, 30 minute lunch, no midday naps… the corporate world has so many restrictions! Even in smaller companies there are many guidelines to be met from how you answer the phone to what’s in your email signature line.
Surely having more flexibility is a benefit and sparks so much creative inspiration. Some work better in the mornings, others at night. If you need a midday nap to rest or a long lunch with your team to brainstorm and break then it’s okay.
This week in Sacramento it’s reaching 105 degrees or greater for 8 days in a row – having the flexibility to work from the beach or rest during the hottest part of the day is a blessing!
Freedom of Choice
One of the best things for me about being an entrepreneur is that I have so many choices. I choose the clients I get to work with, the hours to work, my team and the projects to pursue. You may not fully appreciate it without remembering the stress and restrictions of a traditional job.
Sometimes it’s the small things like wearing whatever shoes you’d like or taking a longer coffee break, all the way up to the biggest benefits like planning a vacation whenever you choose and turning down client work that doesn’t fill you with joy and inspiration.
So whether or not you’re celebrating America’s independence day, take some time to reflect and enjoy the freedoms we all have as entrepreneurs!
