Getting Started with Systems

March 28, 2013 Systems by Kelly 1 Comment

I’ve been wondering… have you considered holding your child back from kindergarten if they don’t yet have a grad school picked out? I’m guessing you think that idea is crazy. Yet every day I hear from entrepreneurs who haven’t began a calendaring system because they don’t have their full time team, office suite and trademarks in place.

Systems don’t have to be all or nothing, and you can get started with systems today, in 10 minutes or less, and start the process. Why do we have this all or nothing mentality and how can you get started now?

Do you get caught up in event excitement?

March 26, 2013 Business Building by Kelly Leave a Comment

If you’ve ever found yourself at an event or conference and caught up in the excitement and then find yourself purchasing something that you don’t use and wonder why?

Once, on a trip to Disneyland, I was amazed that I began thinking of buying a pair of novelty Mickey Mouse ears. Surprised at the thought, I began to understand how a person can easily get caught up in the excitement of an environment, and seeing everyone else with Goofy hats or ears normalizes the experience.

As entrepreneurs, we must be aware that the same things happens at events and it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and end up buying expensive upsells that don’t serve our current business needs.

Sometimes, the next level program and product is exactly what you need to grow your business (and that’s awesome!) but so many times I watch well meaning entrepreneurs jump into commitments they haven’t thought through.

It’s just like those Mickey Mouse ears – when you’re at Disneyland, you want to fit into the crowd, you’re the odd one if you don’t wear them. But when you’re back in everyday life, it becomes more clear exactly how something fits into your life.

I wonder how many Disneyland sweaters end up at Goodwill? If you go into an event and get caught up in the excitement then it’s easier to be convinced that you can prolong this good experience if you just buy…

Remember to be aware and to critically assess what you need most in your business, how you learn best and seek that out actively.

Watch this video from Kelly about why we get wrapped up in the excitement:

Because I’m Not Your B**ch

March 25, 2013 Personal Development by Kelly Leave a Comment

There’s a disturbing trend among business people, especially entrepreneurs and I need to say something here and now.

When you hire a contractor, consultant or even a part time employee, they are not your b~tch.

Back in the day when I worked 40 hours in an office, my soul being crushed daily by the banality of it all, my boss had every right to show up at my desk and say “stop doing that and start doing this.” She could direct me as such every day, every hour if she wanted. Because I was a full-time and dedicated employee, that was a benefit of our relationship.

However, most entrepreneurs are not dedicated to one client full time. So why are those clients treating them in the same way (and getting away with it!)?  Continue Reading →

Systems in Real Life

March 21, 2013 Systems by Kelly Leave a Comment

While I teach business systems, I often use examples of systems in real life because they are easier for most people (who don’t love systems) to understand.

Here are two existing systems that you probably try to practice in your own life.  Continue Reading →

Have you Stopped Loving Your Business?

March 18, 2013 Business Building by Kelly 1 Comment

Recently I’ve spoken with several entrepreneurs who say things such as, “I’m just not passionate about my business,” or “I want to get rid of this company and never look back.” In the midst of thinking ahead to a transition plan or looking to sell your business there are a few considerations to make.

1. What are the things about your business that “bug” you regularly?

Take an inventory of your business and everything from the minor annoyances to the all out, break down in tears problems that plague you. Write down what you come up against and would like to change. It may help to grade these problems from occasional to every day or small problem to huge issue.  Continue Reading →

Facebook Events are the New Spam

March 14, 2013 Marketing by Kelly Leave a Comment

For many years I worked with a corporation here in California, training their interns and developing systems throughout the business. We learned that so many “unwritten rules” had to be documented when one day an intern covering the front desk asked me to cover the phones so he could get the ID number from a copy machine on the other side of the building. Curious, I asked a few questions and learned that a caller on hold needed the number to send out more toner.

I picked up the phone and said “we’re under contract with-” they hung up. After explaining to the intern that this was a popular scam and the company calling didn’t have an order from us and would have charged us 3 times the value of the toner, we included this in the front desk manual for all interns to read.

Recently, I’ve been noticing that well meaning entrepreneurs are using a similar tactic on Facebook in the hopes of growing their business. But they’re only succeeding in annoying me and I suspect many of their friends.  Continue Reading →

Do You REALLY Want a Business That Runs Without You?

March 7, 2013 Business Building by Kelly Leave a Comment

It’s the dream of every entrepreneur to sit on a beach sipping alcoholic beverages in the sun while money flows easily into their bank accounts with absolutely no effort on their part.

I say it’s a dream, but in reality it’s more like a fantasy. Don’t get me wrong, if that’s truly your ideal lifestyle then there are ways to achieve it, but I believe that most entrepreneurs (especially the ones I work with) have a much different dream.

These entrepreneurs want to wake up excited about their day, not swatting the snooze button for the third time this morning. They want plenty of time to enjoy a latte or send their kids off to school, walk the dog and read the paper. This entrepreneur wants to look forward to every single appointment on the calendar, without fail, each day and look forward to tomorrow even more.  Continue Reading →

Do Systems Have to be Boring?

March 4, 2013 Systems by Kelly 1 Comment

Sometimes when I talk about systems I get the feeling the other person is imagining a stuffy old room full of books and manuals and people working slowly, barely able to keep awake they’re so bored with work.

Yet when systems are actually in place for most entrepreneurs – especially those left brain creatives – they’re anything but boring. Today I’m dispelling the most common myths of systems to help you visualize and see how systems could fit into your business.

Myth: Systems are paper based  Continue Reading →
